About Us
The Carlton Uniting Church – known to locals as Church of All Nations, or CAN – is a thoughtful, lively and welcoming worshipping community, with a strong heart for creating a just and inclusive local community.
The Church building can be found at 180 Palmerston Street, Carlton, and the Church community can be found worshipping there at 10am on Sundays, and via Zoom for communion at 7.45am on Wednesdays. You are very welcome at these services.
During the week, CAN works in the local community through its Community Support service, located in the centre next door to the church, providing emergency relief, community programs and social inclusion activities for the local community. CAN Community Support is part of the Church of All Nations in Carlton, a Parish Mission of the Uniting Church in Australia.
The Indigenous Hospitality House is a Christian community house in Melbourne that offers rooms for Indigenous families who have come from out of town to support a family member in hospital.
The Church of All Nations has been part of the fabric of Carlton for over 150 years, offering support to vulnerable people, speaking out for justice, and celebrating the gifts of all cultures to our societies. CAN Community Support was started by the Church community over 30 years ago and has continued to grow and change in response to the needs of the people it serves.
Heritage at CAN
The church building of CAN, and the organ, are both registered on list of Heritage Victoria.
The present church on this site, designed by noted Melbourne architects Reed & Barnes, was opened on 6 March 1870. Built in bluestone with stucco dressings, it is unusually designed in a Romanesque style. The original plans showed a spire to the right of the main façade. The interior includes a gallery at the rear – provision was made in the foundations and in the fenestration for erecting galleries down the sides of the church, but this didn’t eventuate.
The organ was built by George Fincham at a cost of £239 and was opened on 16 August 1877; it was the gift of the young people of the church, as recorded on a plaque beneath the central tower of the organ case. This comprised the casework, console, façade pipes, Great and Pedal Organs of the present instrument. The Swell Organ was later added by George Fincham at a cost of £165 and opened on 13 April 1886.

Paul Madden Memorial Window
In November 2022 the congregation and many in the wider community were shocked by the sudden death of Paul Madden. Paul for many years was a stalwart of the CAN congregation and involved in many projects and causes beyond the life of the congregation. During 2023 plans were underway to raise funds for a Memorial window that was installed and dedicated on November 26, 2023 in the presence of many of his family friends and colleagues.
